August 2 – Mont Saint Michel

This morning we attended service at the American Church in Paris, located along the Seine near the Orsay museum. Afterwards, we discovered that we knew the Assistant pastor’s brother-in-law, who lives in Helena. Further, the Associate pastor had attended Matt’s seminary (Fuller) in Seattle a few years before him and they had some seminary friends in common as well!

The train ride to Mont Saint Michel took us through some beautiful Normandy countryside – very close to the WWII D-day invasion beaches. It is hard to imagine Allied soldiers making their way across this countryside, liberating German occupied France village by village, it all looks so peaceful now.
Mont Saint Michel is located on an island just off the shore of France where Brittany and Normady meet. An abby was first built here over one thousand years ago and it has been a pilgramage site for centuries. Matt and I have always been captivated by how beautiful the ancient buildings appear atop the island, coupled with the tides which engulf and isolate the island from the shore during high tides. The tides used to cut off the island completely from the shore (making it an island!) until a causeway was built in the 20th century.
We had a great time ascending to the peak and touring the abbey.

The girls particularly enjoyed their medieval souvineers from the gift shop :)

We were very happy with our decision to make this an overnight trip. Mont Saint Michel was beautiful in the dusk and nightfall. We continued to walk around and enjoy the views into the night.
